Research Essay Brainstorms sheet
Throughout the entirety of phase I and phase II we have looked at and talked about a variety of authors, topics, and ideas when it came to learning about politics of language. It is something that I didn’t know I would ever be interested in but to be honest learning about it is refreshing for me. As I have said multiple times previously it has helped me open my eyes to realize that it is okay to feel comfortable with who you are and to feel comfortable to be able to express yourself by who you are and to have the freedom to use your own voice. I would say…

Poem Packet
The three poems that I read from this packet were “Even the most kindhearted white woman, A small Needful Fact, and Bullet Points.” I found A small Needful Fact interesting because it was a poem describing how Eric Garner works at the Parks and Rec Department, to help grow plants, take care of the environment for all living organisms living in it. I liked this poem because a poem with such a simple concept it resembles how life is, how life all starts at the bottom and that it takes time and care and most importantly patience for it to grow nice and healthy. I also picked the poem Even…

Nobody mean more to me than you and the future life of willie Jordan
Reflecting back onto Phase 1 The text that I remember and will bring with me as we go along into phase 2 and the rest of this English class is Nobody Mean More to Me Than You And the Future Life of Willie Jordan. The reason to why I say this is the text that I will remember is that this was the first text that we read and class and the first text that I have ever read in my life that opened up my eyes to believe that it is okay to feel comfortable and be able to use your own voice whether that be through public speaking…

Rhetorical Situation Worksheet
From what I got from the video Fatimah Asghar is speaking about recognizing your identity. During the video she spoke about how she found the message behind a Coca-Cola commercial to be beautiful when they started including kids of different ethnic backgrounds to sing the song. She then speaks on how she had difficulties on what she associated herself to be. This video was posted 7 years ago on Ted Talk. The authors name of this speech is Fatimah Asghar who identifies as an American Muslim. Her investment on this issue is to bring more thought into the difficulties an individual might face when discovering their identity as a person…

Rhetorical situation worksheet (Jordan)
Similar to the first two texts that we have read this text is responding to giving people the write to be able to write in their own voice. That people shouldn’t have to feel as if they have to give up who they are and what they have known themselves for in order to be “accepted,” in society. This text not only touched up on this reoccurring issue but also police gun violence against minorities (specifically Black individuals) Later on within this text it mentions the death of Reggie Jordan the 22-year old brother of Willie Jordan and how even with the help of students, putting fundraisers, etc Reggie’s death…

Response to Tan’s essay
I personally enjoyed Amy Tan’s essay for the reason that it was similar/related to the same ideas that we had read within our first text Should Writer’s use they own English by Vershawn Ashanti Young. It emphasizes on the idea that people should have the right to speak in their “native tongue,” whether that be the language they grew up primarily speaking or the type of English that they speak. Within this text by Amy Tan, she discusses how it can be confusing and difficult when having to speak the “English,” that she normally speaks with towards her mother, Lover, and Family and the “English,” that she speaks for more…

Rhetorical Situation Worksheet
Context & Exigence: What topic/conversation is this text responding to? What year is tThis he text published? What is the exigence–that is, what motivating occasion/issue/concern prompted the writing? The motivating occasion could be a current or historical event, a crisis, pending legislation, a recently published alternative view, or another ongoing problem. The topic that this text is trying to respond to is the topic of whether or not people should be able to have the freedom to speak their own way throughout pieces of writing and is also a direct message to a man named Stanley Fish who believes otherwise. The motivation that came to produce this article was to…
